Annual General Meeting 2017

SydWest Multicultural Services held its 2017 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 2nd November 2017 at the Civic Centre in Penrith City Council. The 80+ attendees heard from Mayor John Thain about the growing diversity and growing support for multiculturalism and inclusiveness that is a feature of the growing city of Penrith.

The new Board consists of Robert Fitzgerald Chair, Raquel Ricafort-Bleza Vice Chair, Bridget Sarris Treasurer and Directors Dr. Moninder Singh, Noel Hiffernan, Vish Viswanathan, Karin McKay, Tamara Giles.

During the event our service participants shared their personal stories that were greatly impacted by their connection with SydWest.

  • Dr Samer Sirri shared his story of the horrors of war before leaving Syria, losing family and friends. Arriving in Australia with his young family, he has settled in Penrith and is working hard to get Australian medical certification. Dr Samer cannot wait to “pay back” Australia for welcoming him and his family to the country.
  • Hadi Fathi is a young 18-year-old man from Afghanistan who quickly embraced the many opportunities available to him through SydWest. Hadi has been working hard on his education, he is also a mad-keen soccer fan and was accepted into the Australian Soccer Academy. He was proud to announce that he had driven to the AGM because he now has a licence, which SydWest helped him to obtain through their Learner Driver Mentoring Program.

The event concluded with a presentation from Elfa Moraitakis, CEO outlining future directions for SydWest across Greater Western Sydney before everyone enjoyed an evening of networking and refreshments. [updated 16/1/18]
