SydWest Multicultural Services is delighted to be part of the pilot Healthy Older People Partnership (HOPP) program for our elderly clients in Western Sydney - the majority of whom are from non-English speaking backgrounds.
The six month pilot, which began in April 2015, involved training our community care workers to take the program into the homes of our elderly clients to help reduce the risk of falls in the home. In total, 88 clients agreed to take part in the pilot, which involved receiving at least half an hour of activity time every week with their care worker.
We have been overwhelmed by the positive response so far. Care workers report that most clients have taken well to the activities and are trying their best. Some of our clients have even said they are noticing reduced joint pain, more flexibility and better ability to move as a result of doing the activities. Some clients have even requested additional activities during their other service times.
