Everyone in this exhibition has had to leave their homeland, escaping war or political unrest and other social upheavals. Many have fled as refugees to transitional countries before being accepted into Australia. Some have found their families split across countries in the refugee settlement process, with children and relatives across the world.
A strong theme for all the photograph subjects is the importance of cultural tradition and spirituality in their lives. You can see in many of the photographs the religious icons and altars that people hold dear in their homes. Family is another strong theme on show.
Capturing the Moment is a visual story of Making Australia Home and is an accompaniment to the Stories of Making Australia Home published by SydWest in 2016. This booklet is available online and provides an informative and educational addition to learning about the lives of refugees settling in greater Western Sydney.
